Underachievers Please Try Harder, Manchester 28/09/10

“Good evening, we’re The Paraffins.” Semantically questionable, given that there’s just the one of him – a friendly young Scotsman called Billy (insert your own “Billy No Mates” joke here, he’s doubtless heard it a hundred times already) but we’ll let it go. He’s definitely a bit of a one-man band anyway – full backing tracks, cute little pastel blue guitar, floor drum – dishing out gloriously wayward and amiable little quirk-pop nuggets. Not averse to throwing the odd rock pose either or having a rather foppish bash at the cymbals on the next band’s drumkit, he’s definitely not your wallflower kind of solo artist – reminiscent both musically and performance wise of great lost local electro-warrior The Star Fighter Pilot or Napoleon IIIrd. Proof that great pop doesn’t need four people to make it. Cath Aubergine, music-dash.co.uk
